Keeping Ska Alive in Utah: Atypical Heroes on the ZHZ Podcast

Meet Atypical Heroes: Utah’s Ska Punk Powerhouse

If you’re looking for a band that embodies the energy, heart, and DIY spirit of ska punk, look no further than Salt Lake City’s own Atypical Heroes. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the full crew on the latest episode of the ZHZ Podcast, where we dove into their origins, wildest gigs, and what it takes to keep ska alive in the valley.

From Bar Gigs to Big Stages

Atypical Heroes have played everything from intimate bar shows to opening for legends like Voodoo Glow Skulls and Bite Me Bambi. The band shared how those bigger gigs bring a different kind of energy—packed crowds, fans dancing from the first note, and a sense of community that’s hard to beat. But whether it’s a bustling venue or a local bar, the band brings the same infectious energy every time.

When doors opened, people were flying through. Right from the start, it was a good show.”  —Atypical Heroes

The Origin Story: How Atypical Heroes Came Together

The band’s story is a classic tale of musical serendipity. Jesus (vocals/guitar) had been dreaming of starting a ska band since high school, but it took years—and a few run-ins at St. Patty’s gigs and bagpipe bands—before the right lineup came together. Members hail from various musical backgrounds, including Irish punk and even teaching high school band, but their shared love for ska and punk brought them together.

New Music & Vinyl: Self-Titled Album Drops August 8th

Big news for fans: Atypical Heroes’ self-titled debut album drops **August 8th**, and they’re celebrating with a release show at the Ice Haus in Salt Lake City on **August 15th** alongside The Avenues and The Makeways. The band pressed a limited run of 275 red vinyl records—so if you’re a collector, you’ll want to grab one before they’re gone!

“It was expensive, but you know… the minimum was 250 and we did 275. The vinyl itself is red, so that’s fun.”  —Atypical Heroes

Influences, Advice, and the Utah Ska Scene

The band’s influences range from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Streetlight Manifesto to ska  legends like the Aquabats. They’re passionate about supporting the local scene, networking, and encouraging new musicians to just get out there and play.

Band Advice for Aspiring Artists:

- Keep doing your thing—someone will be inspired by you.

- Play as much as you can, with anyone you can.

- Support your local artists and go to shows.

- Do it for the love of music, not the money.

- There’s a place for everyone, no matter your skill level.

What’s Next for Atypical Heroes?

With a new album ready to drop and another already written, Atypical Heroes are just getting started. They’re looking forward to more shows, more music, and maybe even some bagpipe-infused ska in the future (seriously!).

Catch Them Live:

- Album Release Show: August 15th at the Ice Haus, Salt Lake City

- Merch: Shirts, stickers, patches, and vinyl available at shows (cash, card, Venmo, and even hugs accepted!)
